The repetitions are great for little readers. I like how the text goes from fox to owl to snake, then Gruffalo, then back in reverse order (snake, owl, fox). I like the cleverness of the mouse tricking the other creatures one by one. We love this book! It’s just so clever and fun, and the illustrations are great. The rhymes and illustrations are great fun! He doesn’t understand everything about it, especially about how the mouse is tricking the other animals, but I think the fact that he has more to uncover about it is part of why it keeps his interest. My 2-year-old son loves the Gruffalo! Likely, this is partially due to our enthusiastic reading of it since he was in the womb, but I think there’s more to it than that. The mouse finally gets to sit and enjoy a nut without anything threatening him. The Gruffalo is convinced this is because they’re scared of the mouse and then he runs away when the mouse says he’s getting hungry and his favorite food is Gruffalo crumble. So the mouse tricks the Gruffalo into thinking he’s very scary by leading him to the other creatures, who take one look at the Gruffalo and run away. But then he finds out the Gruffalo really exists, and of course he wants to eat the mouse, too. He tricks each of them into letting him go by convincing them he has a very scary friend, the Gruffalo, about to show up. A little mouse is out looking for food, but gets threatened by one predator after another.
